Beyond What
From the artist's statement:
“We reach for destinies beyond what…" wrote Alice Walker and published in 1973 in her poem Beyond What from the collection, Revolutionary Petunias. Not many years later I found this book, this poem and it has since banged round and round in my head, in my heart, in my being until finally I find myself releasing it onto canvas.
Walker wrote,
“and in the romantic hush
of promises
perceive each the others life
as known mystery.
Shared. But inviolate."
Known mystery. What does that look like? What does it mean to share and remain whole, inviolate? What does this idea of wholeness and co-conspiracy, of completeness and co-mingling look like? How does it express itself?
